THE PROBLEM

The social stigma towards people's struggles with wellness and preconceptions of therapy discourages them from seeking help.
COVID-19 has especially amplified anxiety by affecting financial, emotional, physical, and social barriers.

THE SOLUTION

Provide a more approachable and accessible start to wellness by integrating Spotify's personalized audio into users' everyday lives to induce psychological effects and help process emotions.

MARKET RESEARCH

It was important to conduct a peer benchmarking analysis on existing mental health applications to create a foundation for Spotify Wellness' essential features.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

I conducted 9 user interviews. Participants were within the age range of 19-23 years old. Majority of them were college students while a few had a full-time job.

01

How do you deal with stress and/or anxiety?

02

While dealing with difficult times, do you feel discouraged to seek help from others?

03

Do you find music to be therapeutic?

04

Is therapy unaffordable/inaccessible to you?

AFFINITY MAPPING

After gathering the data from the interviews, I grouped the responses into overarching insights by observations, habits, and ideas to be implemented to create a safer commute.

MAJOR INSIGHTS

Music

A significant proportion, approximately 88%, of participants utilized an audio track as a coping mechanism for managing unsettling emotions.

Sensory

Approximately 67% of participants utilized visual imagery or kinesthetic techniques as an effective therapeutic method, as reported in their responses.

Accessibility

Approximately 56% of the participants indicated that therapy was unaffordable and not easily accessible to them, as per the survey data.

WIREFRAMES

Using the feedback and insights gained from research and analysis, a low-fidelity prototype was created to begin user testing.

FINAL PRODUCT AND FEATURES

As we continued to iterate the features based on our feedback, we focused on these exclusive features of the application to reflect the project proposal.

PROTOTYPE

WITH MORE TIME, I WANT TO EXPLORE...

  • Social support: Create a social platform within the app that allows users to connect with others who are also using the app, share their experiences, and offer support to one another.
  • Mindful movement: Integrating mindful movement practices such as yoga and tai chi, with audio guidance for use
  • Personalized playlists for different cultures and languages: Create playlists that are tailored to different cultures and languages, to make the app more inclusive and accessible to a diverse range of users.
  • Mindful activities playlists: In further exploration to mood-based playlists, create playlists that are specifically tailored to specific activities or tasks, such as "Work-from-home" or "Exercise" that can help users focus and stay calm.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Integrating features that promote mental wellness into an established audio streaming application is a challenging task that requires considering the diverse needs and preferences of users and striving for inclusivity and accessibility in design and development. Various possibilities, such as guided meditations, mindfulness exercises, therapy, personalization, integration with wearables, and social support can be explored to enhance the user experience.

However, it's important to remember that mental wellness is an ongoing effort and the app should provide users with tools and resources to continue their journey.
